Your certificate and policy wording are emailed to you immediately after purchase. You can also access them anytime in your user dashboard after signing in.
Which activities are covered?
Over 90 activities are included as standard across all plans, including trekking up to 7,000m, scuba diving up to 40m, white water rafting, bungee jumping, mountain biking, and many more. You can check the full list during the quote process.
Do I need to add activities separately?
No. If an activity is on our covered list, it is included automatically in your policy at no extra cost. There is nothing to add or declare.
Is helicopter rescue included?
Yes. Emergency helicopter evacuation is covered as standard when medically necessary, including in remote areas where ground transport is not viable.
Can I buy cover for a multi-country trip?
Yes. There is no limit on the number of countries you visit during your trip. Your cover moves with you wherever you travel within your selected region.
Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?
Declaring pre-existing medical conditions is optional. If you declare a condition, the medical screening service will confirm whether it can be included, whether any special terms apply, and whether an additional premium is needed. If you choose not to declare, the policy can still cover unexpected accidents, emergencies, and unrelated illnesses while you travel, but medical expenses connected to an undeclared pre-existing condition will not be covered.
Can my route change after I buy the policy?
Yes. Backpacking routes often evolve. Your cover continues as you move between destinations in your selected cover area.
Is this policy built for multi-country backpacking?
Yes. It is designed for backpacking trips that include multiple countries under one policy.
What if my bags or gear are lost while travelling between stops?
Personal belongings and baggage are covered for insured loss, theft, or damage, subject to policy terms and limits.
Are adventure activities included during the trip?
Yes. A broad range of activities are included as standard, so active travel days can still be covered. View the full list of activities covered.
Can I start this policy once I am already abroad?
No. Backpacking cover must be arranged before you leave your home country.
Is this policy suitable for a full gap year?
Yes. It is designed for extended trips and can cover one continuous journey of up to 12 months.
Can I combine travel, working, and volunteering on one policy?
Yes. This policy is built for mixed-purpose gap year travel, including working holidays and organised volunteering placements.
Do I need a fixed itinerary before I buy?
No. You can still be covered even if your route evolves over time, as long as travel remains within your selected cover area.
Does cancellation cover apply to a long-duration trip?
Yes. Cancellation and curtailment cover can apply for insured events, including eligible prepaid costs.
When do I need to buy gap year insurance?
Before you leave your home country. Cover cannot be started after departure.
What altitude is covered?
Cover includes trekking and hiking up to 7,000m automatically. Routes from 5,000m to 7,000m must be guided. Activity above 7,000m falls into technical mountaineering territory and sits outside the policy definition.
Is there a specific helicopter rescue excess in the policy?
Yes. The higher £500 excess only applies to helicopter rescue in Nepal.

Are there depth limits?
Yes. Recreational scuba diving is automatically covered up to 40 metres in depth.
Is solo diving covered?

Is my camera gear covered?
Camera and underwater photography equipment can fall under personal effects cover, but photographic equipment is treated as valuables. That means it is subject to the valuables limit of £350 in total, the single article limit of £250, and the usual unattended/checked-in baggage exclusions. You should keep receipts or proof of value where possible.

Work of a predominantly manual nature is otherwise excluded, other than volunteering that fits the policy definition.
